Backlit shots, subject positioned between camera and sun, either look genuinely magical, glowing rim light, dreamy flare, or completely ruined, washed-out contrast, an unreadable silhouette, distracting flare blobs scattered across the frame, and for a long time my own results landed on the wrong side of that line more often than the right one. Here's what actually changed that ratio in my favor.
Lens hood removal, counterintuitively, is often necessary rather than harmful for deliberately embracing flare as a creative element, since a lens hood is specifically designed to block exactly the kind of off-axis light that creates flare in the first place. For shots where I want visible flare as part of the image, I remove the hood entirely; for shots where I want the glow and rim light without distracting flare artifacts, I keep it on.
Positioning the sun partially behind an obstruction, a tree branch, a building edge, your subject's own head, rather than having it fully exposed directly in frame, controls flare intensity considerably while still maintaining that backlit glow, a technique that took deliberate practice to use intentionally rather than something I only discovered accidentally through trial and error.
Exposing for your subject specifically, rather than for the overall scene average, is essential for backlit portraits, since a camera's automatic metering will otherwise expose for the bright sky and sun, leaving your actual subject as a dark, underexposed silhouette unless that's the specific effect you're deliberately going for.
Fill flash or a reflector positioned to bounce light back onto your subject's face solves the exposure balance problem more reliably than exposure compensation alone, letting you properly expose the subject while still preserving that bright, glowing rim light and background from the backlit sun.
Shooting in raw specifically for backlit scenes gives meaningfully more recovery flexibility than JPEG, since the extreme dynamic range in these scenes, bright sun, dark subject, everything in between, often needs more recovery latitude in shadows and highlights than a JPEG file can provide without visible quality loss.
Manual focus, or at minimum a manually selected single focus point placed deliberately on your subject's eye, avoids the common autofocus problem in backlit scenes where the camera's system gets confused by the extreme contrast and either hunts indecisively or locks onto the bright background instead of your intended subject.
A lens with genuinely good flare resistance, something worth researching specifically before committing to shooting backlit work regularly, makes a real, measurable difference in how controllable and pleasant flare artifacts actually look, since cheaper lenses or older lens coatings often produce harsher, more distracting flare patterns than modern, well-coated optics.
For video specifically, a matte box or even a simple handheld flag positioned to block direct sun from hitting the front lens element, while still allowing the backlit glow around your subject, gives more precise control than a still photographer typically needs, since flare artifacts read differently and often more distractingly in moving footage than in a single still frame.
Timing shots for when the sun sits lower in the sky, closer to golden hour rather than harsh midday sun, generally produces more flattering, warmer backlit results with softer, more controllable flare characteristics than fighting with a sun positioned high and harsh overhead.
Bracketing exposure specifically for backlit scenes, capturing a properly exposed subject frame and a properly exposed sky and background frame separately, gives genuine flexibility to blend the two in editing for scenes where the dynamic range genuinely exceeds what any single exposure, however carefully metered, can capture in one frame.
The shift that actually improved my backlit work most wasn't any single technical trick above, it was moving from treating backlighting as an unpredictable risk to fighting around, toward treating it as a deliberate creative choice with its own specific, learnable technique, planned for in advance rather than improvised in the moment and hoped for the best.
A specific golden hour engagement session, deliberately scheduled and planned entirely around backlighting as the core creative concept rather than an incidental condition to manage, became the clearest demonstration of how much planning versus improvising actually changes results.
