While cloud backup is a valuable layer, relying on it exclusively without any local copies carries its own risks, dependent entirely on a stable internet connection during upload, subject to a service provider's own reliability and continued existence, and often limited by upload bandwidth for large RAW files. Treating cloud backup as one layer within a broader system, rather than a complete solution on its own, avoids over-relying on any single method.
For photographers backing up to physical hard drives or SSDs for long-term archival storage, it's worth knowing that all storage media degrades or can fail over time, and drives sitting unused for years carry real risk of failure when eventually needed. Periodically checking archival drives, and considering a refresh cycle of copying archives to new media every several years, protects against the specific risk of forgotten, aging storage quietly failing before you ever discover the problem.
