Modern autofocus and metering systems require a circular polarizer rather than an older linear design, since linear polarizers interfere with the semi-reflective mirrors many autofocus and metering systems rely on internally. This is worth confirming specifically when purchasing, since older or cheaper filters sometimes aren't clearly labeled and the difference genuinely matters for compatibility with modern camera bodies.
Rather than setting a polarizer once and leaving it, I rotate it while actively watching the effect through live view for every new composition, since the optimal rotation angle changes with your position relative to the sun and needs to be reassessed each time you meaningfully change your shooting angle or location.
The shift that actually improved my landscape work wasn't buying a better polarizer, it was learning to genuinely evaluate, scene by scene, whether the effect it produced was actually serving the composition or just applied out of habit, and being willing to remove it entirely when the light and angle didn't call for it.
