How I Actually Use Manual Mode: The Exposure Triangle in Real Shooting Conditions

A friend asked me to teach her manual mode over coffee, gave me a notepad, and told me to explain it like she'd never touched a camera before. What follows is close to what I actually wrote down for her that afternoon, with a few things added that I forgot to mention at the time and had to follow up on later.

Three settings, and only three, control every exposure

Every photo's brightness comes down to three settings working together, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Auto mode picks all three for you based on what the camera's meter reads. Manual mode means you pick all three yourself. That's the entire conceptual leap, nothing more mysterious than that, and once it clicks, the rest is just practice.

Aperture: how much light gets in, and what stays sharp

Aperture is the opening inside your lens, measured in f-numbers like f/2.8 or f/8. Here's the part that trips people up at first, a smaller f-number means a bigger opening, which lets in more light. f/1.8 lets in far more light than f/11, even though 1.8 is the smaller number. Beyond brightness, aperture controls depth of field, how much of your photo is in focus front-to-back. A wide-open aperture like f/2 gives you a blurry background behind a sharp subject, which is what most portrait photographers want. A narrow aperture like f/11 keeps almost everything in focus, which is closer to what you want for a landscape where the whole scene should be sharp.

Shutter speed: how much light, and whether motion freezes or blurs

Shutter speed is how long the sensor is exposed to light, measured in fractions of a second like 1/500 or 1/30. Faster shutter speeds let in less light but freeze motion, a running dog at 1/1000 will look sharp. Slower shutter speeds let in more light but any movement, either from your subject or your own hands, will show as blur. As a starting reference point I gave my friend, for handheld shots of a stationary subject, don't go slower than about 1/60 unless you're bracing the camera against something solid, and for anything moving quickly, start around 1/500 and adjust from there based on results.

ISO: the setting you should treat as your last resort

ISO controls how much the camera amplifies the light it receives. A higher ISO brightens a dark scene without needing a slower shutter or wider aperture, but it introduces visible grain, called noise, especially at higher values. My advice, which I gave her directly, adjust aperture and shutter speed first, based on the depth of field and motion look you want, and only raise ISO as needed to get a correct exposure once those two are set. Treating ISO as an afterthought rather than a starting point avoids unnecessarily noisy photos.

How they work together: the exposure triangle, without the jargon

These three settings trade off against each other. If you open your aperture wider, you can use a faster shutter speed or lower ISO for the same overall brightness. If you're stuck in low light and can't open your aperture any wider, you're choosing between a slower shutter speed, risking blur, or a higher ISO, risking noise. There's no setting that avoids this tradeoff entirely, every choice moves the compromise somewhere else in the triangle.

The practical way to actually learn it

I told her to skip the temptation to memorize rules and instead do this, put the camera in manual mode, pick any static subject, and take the same photo six times, changing only one setting each time while keeping the other two fixed. Look at the six results side by side. That direct comparison teaches what each setting actually does to the final image faster than any amount of reading, because you're seeing cause and effect directly rather than through an explanation.

A shortcut worth knowing about, once the concept clicks

Once she got a feel for the three settings individually, I mentioned Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes, semi-automatic modes where you set one value and let the camera pick the other two. These aren't cheating, and I still use Aperture Priority myself for a lot of casual shooting where I care about depth of field and don't want to manage every setting manually in a fast-changing situation. Full manual mode is a tool for specific control, not a badge of seriousness you need to use for every photo you take.

What actually changed after she practiced this

Two weeks later she sent me photos from a hike, all shot manually, with a genuinely nice shallow depth of field on a flower shot she'd deliberately chosen f/2.8 for. That's the whole goal, not memorizing terminology, but making a deliberate choice about how a photo should look and knowing which setting to reach for to get there.
