I bought the Insta360 X4 genuinely skeptical that 360-degree capture was more gimmick than practical tool, something that would look novel in a demo reel and then sit unused once the novelty wore off. Editing my first reframed clip from an actual shoot changed my mind entirely about what this camera actually solves.

The core concept is capturing an entire 360-degree sphere around the camera simultaneously, using dual lenses stitched together in-camera or in post, then "reframing" after the fact to pick whatever specific angle and framing you actually want, well after the moment has already happened and can't be reshot.

Solving a Real Problem

This solved a genuine, recurring problem for me shooting a friend's birthday gathering, where I couldn't predict in advance which direction the most interesting moment would happen. Mounting the camera centrally and capturing everything meant I never missed a moment to bad framing decisions made in real time, since the actual framing decision happens later during editing with full knowledge of what actually occurred.

Image Quality

Image quality at 8K360 resolution, once reframed down to a standard 1080p or 4K output, holds up reasonably well in good light, though it's genuinely softer than dedicated single-lens cameras at equivalent output resolutions, an inherent tradeoff of capturing and processing that much visual information simultaneously.

The Stitch Line

The stitch line, where the two lens captures merge into one continuous sphere, is mostly invisible in good conditions but becomes noticeably more visible in low light or with close subjects crossing directly through that seam, a limitation worth understanding before relying on this for anything requiring flawless, seamless footage throughout.

Stabilization, built around the same principle as gimbal stabilization but applied computationally after the fact since the full sphere is captured regardless of camera movement, produces genuinely remarkable results — footage shot mounted on a selfie stick while walking came back essentially gimbal-smooth without any physical stabilization hardware involved at all.

Invisible Selfie Stick

The invisible selfie stick effect, where the mounting pole itself becomes essentially undisguisable in the reframed output because the camera can see in every direction simultaneously, is a genuinely clever practical benefit for solo content creation, letting me appear in wide, dynamic shots without a visible pole or a second camera operator.

Battery Life

Battery life, rated for roughly two hours of continuous 8K360 recording, held up reasonably across a moderate shooting day, though heavy use of the higher resolution modes drains faster than I initially budgeted for on longer shoots.

Low Light

Low light performance is the most significant honest limitation. Past dim indoor lighting, noise becomes considerably more present than a single-lens camera at an equivalent price point, a real tradeoff for the genuinely unique capture format this camera offers.

Price

At roughly $499, it's positioned as an accessible, if genuinely niche, tool rather than a replacement for a primary camera, and that positioning feels honest given what it actually delivers. This isn't a camera I'd recommend as anyone's only camera, but as a specific solution to the "I don't know where the moment will happen" problem, or for action and travel content where reframing flexibility genuinely matters more than absolute image quality, it fills a role nothing else in my kit does.

Final Verdict

My honest conclusion: I went in expecting a novelty and came out with a genuinely useful tool for a specific category of unpredictable, moment-driven content, even while accepting real image quality tradeoffs compared to dedicated single-lens alternatives.

Editing the reframed footage taught me the technique has a genuine learning curve of its own, distinct from normal video editing. Deciding where to point the "virtual camera" within the captured sphere after the fact requires actually reviewing the full 360 footage first to identify what happened and where, an extra review step that adds real time to the editing process compared to footage that was already framed correctly at the moment of capture.

For action and travel use specifically, mounted on a chest harness or extended pole during activities where I couldn't predict which direction to point a conventional camera, this became genuinely irreplaceable, capturing usable footage from situations where a normal single-lens action camera would have required constant, distracting readjustment to keep up with unpredictable movement and changing points of interest.
