I bought a set of neutral density filters years ago after seeing smooth, silky waterfall shots online, used them exactly twice, produced two genuinely bad images both times, and left them in a drawer for over a year before actually sitting down to learn what I'd gotten wrong. A recent trip past a coastal lighthouse finally pushed me to work through it properly, and what follows is the actual process that came out of that.

What a neutral density filter actually does, stated plainly

A neutral density filter reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor without changing color, letting you use a much slower shutter speed than the ambient light would otherwise allow without overexposing the shot. That slower shutter speed is the entire point, it's what turns moving water, clouds, or crowds into smooth, blurred motion instead of a frozen instant.

My first mistake: not metering before adding the filter

My first attempt years ago, I screwed the filter on and started guessing at settings, producing wildly over or underexposed frames with no real starting point. I now meter the scene properly without the filter first, note the correct exposure, then calculate how much longer the shutter needs to stay open once the filter's light reduction is factored in, a straightforward math step I skipped entirely the first time around.

Choosing filter strength for the actual effect I want

A lighter filter, reducing light by a few stops, suits a subtly blurred waterfall or moving clouds during a shorter exposure. A stronger filter, reducing light by ten stops or more, is what actually smooths ocean waves into a genuinely glassy, minimal look or turns a busy crowd into an empty-feeling scene, requiring exposures measured in tens of seconds or longer even in daylight. Knowing which effect I'm after before choosing a filter has saved me from the mismatched, half-effect results my early attempts kept producing.

A tripod isn't optional, and my second mistake proved it

My second early attempt, I tried hand-holding a shot with a strong filter attached, assuming my camera's stabilization would cover a few seconds of exposure. It did not, the resulting frame was a genuinely unusable blur of the entire scene, not just the water. A stable tripod, and ideally a remote or timer release to avoid touching the camera during the exposure itself, is a genuine requirement for anything beyond the shortest exposures, not a nice-to-have.

Focusing before the filter goes on, not after

Strong neutral density filters are dark enough that autofocus, and often even manual focus by eye, becomes genuinely difficult once the filter is attached, since so little light reaches the viewfinder or sensor. I now focus and lock it, either switching to manual focus or using back-button focus and lifting my thumb, before screwing the filter on, rather than fighting with a nearly black viewfinder trying to focus afterward.

Calculating exposure time for strong filters

For my strongest filter, I use a simple reference chart matching the metered ambient shutter speed to the corrected long-exposure time, since the math for a ten-stop-plus reduction isn't something I can reliably do in my head under time pressure at a shoot. Several free smartphone apps handle this calculation directly now, and I keep one on my phone specifically for this rather than trusting mental math in changing light.

The lighthouse shoot that finally got this right

Setting up at the coastal lighthouse specifically to test what I'd learned, I metered first, chose a mid-strength filter for a several-second exposure to smooth the waves without going fully glassy, locked focus before attaching the filter, and fired the shutter using a remote to avoid any camera shake. The resulting frame, waves rendered as a soft, directional blur against a sharp, static lighthouse, was the first genuinely successful long exposure I'd produced since buying the filters in the first place.

Composing before the filter goes on, a habit that saves real time

Because strong filters make the viewfinder nearly unusable for framing, I now compose and finalize the shot entirely before attaching the filter, checking the frame on the rear screen at full brightness first. Attaching the filter only after composition is locked has cut out a genuine amount of frustrated fiddling I used to do trying to adjust framing through a nearly black viewfinder.

What I'd tell myself before that first attempt years ago

Every mistake from those first two failed attempts came down to skipping a step I assumed I could shortcut, metering, focusing, stabilizing, each one genuinely necessary rather than optional extra caution. The filters that sat in a drawer for over a year weren't the problem, my process was, and it took a dedicated coastal trip and an actual willingness to slow down and follow every step properly to finally get an image out of them worth the effort of carrying them in the first place.
