Custom White Balance for Weddings: How I Stopped Fighting Skin Tones

For years I shot on Auto White Balance and fixed color casts in editing afterward, telling myself it didn't matter since I could correct it in post anyway. A shoot in a client's office, lit entirely by fluorescent tube lighting with a green cast so strong that no amount of editing fully removed it from the skin tones, is what finally got me to stop relying on that assumption.

Why Auto White Balance struggles more than people expect

Auto White Balance works by analyzing the scene and guessing what should be neutral gray or white, then adjusting color accordingly. It does reasonably well in daylight, where the light source is consistent and familiar to the algorithm. It does poorly under mixed or unusual lighting, fluorescent tubes, sodium vapor streetlights, a single colored gel light, or any scene with multiple light sources of different color temperatures hitting the same subject. In those situations, the camera's guess and the actual correct color can be far enough apart that fixing it afterward means working with skin tones that were never captured accurately to begin with, and pushing colors back toward correct in editing often introduces its own artifacts.

What a custom white balance reading actually does

Instead of letting the camera guess, you photograph something you know is neutral gray or white under the actual lighting you're shooting in, and tell the camera to use that specific frame as its reference point for what neutral looks like in that light. Every subsequent photo taken under that same lighting gets color-corrected against a real, measured reference rather than an algorithm's estimate.

How I actually do this on a shoot

I carry a gray card in my bag specifically for this, a flat, neutral gray card sold for this exact purpose, though a plain white sheet of paper works in a pinch if it's genuinely white and not slightly toned. I hold it in front of the subject, in the same light that will fall on them, and take one photo filling as much of the frame as reasonably possible with the card. Then I go into the camera's white balance menu, select the custom or preset white balance option, and point it to that reference photo. The whole process takes under a minute including the menu navigation, and I do it any time I move into meaningfully different lighting during a shoot, walking from an outdoor ceremony into an indoor reception, for instance.

The office shoot that changed my mind, revisited correctly

I went back to that same client's office a few months later for a follow-up shoot and took thirty seconds to set a custom white balance reading under the same fluorescent lighting before starting. The difference was immediate and obvious even glancing at the unedited files on the rear screen, skin tones looked genuinely natural straight out of camera, instead of the sickly green cast I'd fought with in editing the first time. What used to take several minutes of color correction per image in software took zero time, because the camera captured it correctly from the start.

Where this matters less

Outdoors in daylight, Auto White Balance is reliable enough that I don't bother with a custom reading for most shoots, the color temperature of sunlight is consistent enough that the camera's guess and reality are usually close. I still take a reading for anything shot right around sunrise or sunset, where color temperature shifts quickly and unpredictably, or for any indoor scene with artificial lighting, where the payoff is largest.

A mistake worth avoiding

The first time I tried this, I took the gray card reading in one spot in the room and then photographed my subject in a different spot with different light falling on them, near a window versus away from it. The custom reading only accounts for the specific light present in that reference frame, so if your subject moves into different light afterward, the correction stops being accurate. Take your reference reading in the actual spot, under the actual light, your subject will be in.

How this compares to shooting Kelvin manually

Some photographers skip the gray card entirely and just dial in a Kelvin value manually based on experience, guessing something like 3200K for tungsten or 5600K for daylight. This works if you already know your lighting well, but for anything mixed or unfamiliar, a measured gray card reading beats a guess every time, since it accounts for the exact light actually present rather than a textbook approximation of what that light source should be.

Why this is worth the ten seconds

This isn't a technique reserved for advanced or professional shooting. It's a small, repeatable habit that removes an entire category of editing problems before they exist, and unlike a lot of technical camera advice, it takes less time to do than it takes to read this article. I keep a gray card clipped to the outside of my camera bag now specifically so there's no excuse to skip it.
