My first attempts at night cityscape photography produced blurry, noisy, poorly exposed frames that looked nothing like the crisp, glowing city shots I was trying to emulate. Here's the specific, deliberate process I actually use now that consistently gets usable results, built up through a genuine amount of trial and error on location.

Tripod

A sturdy tripod is completely non-negotiable for this kind of work, and I mean genuinely sturdy, not a lightweight travel tripod that flexes in a light breeze. Any camera movement during an exposure lasting several seconds ruins sharpness entirely, and I learned this the frustrating way reviewing a memory card full of soft frames from a trip where I'd tried to save weight with a lighter tripod that simply wasn't rigid enough for the conditions.

Camera Settings

I shoot in manual mode exclusively for this work, setting aperture first, typically somewhere between f/8 and f/11 for landscape-style depth of field across a cityscape, which also happens to be the sweet spot for most lenses' sharpest performance before diffraction softening starts creeping in at smaller apertures.

ISO

ISO stays as low as the scene allows, usually the camera's base ISO around 100, since long exposure noise accumulates over time regardless of ISO setting, and starting from the cleanest possible baseline gives the best final result once the shutter has been open for an extended period.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is the variable I actually adjust to control overall exposure, typically ranging from 10 to 30 seconds depending on how much ambient city light is present and how much motion blur I want in moving elements like traffic light trails or water.

Remote Release

A remote shutter release, or the camera's built-in timer function if I've forgotten the physical remote, eliminates the camera shake that pressing the shutter button directly introduces, a small but genuinely significant source of blur in exposures this long that's easy to overlook until you compare a remote-triggered frame against one where you pressed the button by hand.

Mirror Lock-Up

Mirror lock-up, on cameras with a mechanical mirror mechanism, or simply using electronic shutter mode on mirrorless bodies, removes another small but real source of vibration that can soften an otherwise perfectly composed and exposed long exposure frame.

Bracketing

I bracket exposures more aggressively for night cityscapes than for almost any other genre, since the extreme dynamic range between bright light sources and genuinely dark shadow areas often exceeds what a single frame can capture cleanly, even shooting raw. Three to five bracketed frames, blended later in editing, consistently recover detail a single exposure simply can't hold onto simultaneously.

White Balance

White balance auto-adjustment tends to shift unpredictably between frames with mixed light sources, streetlights, neon signage, distant windows, so I set a fixed, deliberate white balance manually rather than trusting automatic adjustment to stay consistent across a bracketed sequence meant to be blended together later.

Light Trails

For capturing moving light trails from traffic specifically, a shutter speed of around 15 to 20 seconds usually produces clean, continuous light streaks without gaps, though this varies depending on how fast traffic is actually moving through your specific composition, and I've learned to review a test shot immediately rather than assuming a standard number will work identically across different locations.

Focusing at Night

Focus is trickier at night than most photographers initially expect, since autofocus often struggles or hunts entirely in low light. I focus manually, using the camera's magnified live view on a bright point of light or an illuminated building edge, confirming sharp focus visually before locking it and switching to manual focus mode entirely for the remainder of the shoot at that location.

Checking the Histogram

Checking the histogram after each test exposure, rather than trusting how bright the rear screen looks in the dark, catches blown highlights from bright light sources that are easy to miss on a screen your eyes have already adjusted to viewing in near-total darkness.

The difference between my early, frustrating attempts and consistent results now comes down almost entirely to this deliberate, repeatable process rather than any single piece of equipment, though a genuinely sturdy tripod and a remote release are the two items I'd tell anyone starting out in this genre to prioritize before anything else.

Shooting a genuinely challenging scene, a waterfront skyline with both static buildings and moving boat traffic within the same frame, forced me to make a real compromise between the shutter speed that best captured smooth water motion and the speed that kept boat lights as clean points rather than long, distracting streaks. I ended up shooting two separate exposures at different shutter speeds and blending the results in editing, a workaround I wouldn't have thought to plan for without that specific frustrating experience on location.

Weather and atmospheric conditions affect long exposure cityscape work more than I expected starting out. Humid, hazy nights genuinely soften distant details and add an unwanted glow around bright light sources that no amount of careful technique fully corrects for, while clear, dry conditions produce noticeably crisper results from the same location and settings, a variable worth checking forecasts for specifically before planning a dedicated night shoot rather than treating any clear-seeming evening as equally good.
