Product shots, especially anything with real depth, a bottle, a piece of jewelry laid at an angle, a stack of items, need front-to-back sharpness that a single frame at any reasonable aperture often simply can't deliver without either losing detail to diffraction or requiring an aperture so small it demands impractically long exposures. Focus stacking solved that problem for me more reliably than just stopping down ever managed.
The core technique is simple in concept: shoot a series of frames at the same composition, shifting focus slightly between each shot to cover the full depth of your subject, then combine them afterward in software that automatically selects the sharpest in-focus areas from each frame and merges them into one composite image with sharpness throughout that no single frame could have captured alone.
Setting up starts with a genuinely stable tripod, since any camera movement between frames makes the stacking software's job considerably harder and increases the risk of visible stitching artifacts in the final result. I use a tripod with a geared head specifically because it lets me make tiny, precise compositional adjustments without introducing the kind of wobble a ball head sometimes allows.
I shoot in manual focus for the entire stack, never relying on autofocus to reacquire focus between shots, since even small inconsistencies in how autofocus locks between frames can introduce alignment problems the stacking software struggles to reconcile cleanly.
For the actual focus shift between frames, I use small, consistent increments — for a typical product shot with moderate depth, somewhere between 10 and 20 frames covering the full front-to-back range usually gives the stacking software enough overlapping sharp data to produce a clean composite without visible seams.
Lighting needs to stay completely consistent across the entire stack, since any change in exposure or color temperature between frames creates visible banding or color shifts in the final composite. I lock exposure manually for the whole sequence rather than trusting any automatic exposure mode to hold perfectly steady across dozens of consecutive frames.
For the actual stacking software, I've had the most consistent results with dedicated focus-stacking tools rather than trying to accomplish this manually in a general photo editor, since purpose-built software handles the alignment and blending far more reliably than manual layer masking ever managed for me.
Aperture choice for each individual frame in the stack matters more than it might seem. Shooting each frame at a moderate aperture, typically f/5.6 to f/8 depending on the lens, gives a reasonable in-focus band per frame without introducing the diffraction softness that comes from stopping down further, letting the stack itself do the work of covering full depth rather than relying on one extremely small aperture.
Reviewing the composite carefully after stacking is essential, since even good software occasionally produces small artifacts, a slightly soft transition zone or a faint ghosting effect, particularly around edges with fine detail or reflective surfaces. I always zoom in at 100 percent across the full frame before considering a stacked image finished, catching and manually correcting any problem areas that the automated blend didn't handle perfectly.
For reflective or transparent subjects specifically, glass, polished metal, jewelry with faceted surfaces, focus stacking can introduce genuinely tricky artifacts where reflections shift between frames in ways that confuse the blending algorithm. For these subjects, I sometimes shoot a smaller number of frames with larger focus increments and do more manual blending by hand rather than relying entirely on automated stacking.
The time investment is real, a proper stacked product shot takes considerably longer to shoot and process than a single frame at a compromise aperture, but for genuine product work where a client expects sharp detail throughout a piece with real depth, the technique delivers a level of quality that stopping down alone simply can't match without introducing its own visible softness from diffraction at very small apertures.
Working through a specific difficult subject, a ring photographed at a dramatic angle with both the band and a raised gemstone needing to render sharp simultaneously, taught me that focus increment size needs to shrink considerably for subjects with fine, close-together detail compared to a simpler subject with more gradual depth. What worked as a 15-frame stack for a straightforward bottle shot needed closer to 30 frames, with much smaller focus shifts between each, to properly resolve the ring's fine detail without visible soft transition zones in the final composite.
Lighting consistency deserves one more specific mention: continuous LED lighting has become my strong preference over flash for stacked work specifically, since even minor flash-to-flash power inconsistency across dozens of frames, something too subtle to notice in normal single-frame work, becomes genuinely visible as flickering or subtle exposure shifts once you're blending that many frames together into one composite image.
