A client getting married at a genuinely remote mountain venue asked, almost as an afterthought during planning, whether I could get a shot of the stars over the reception tent later that night. I'd never seriously attempted astrophotography before that conversation, and had about six weeks to actually learn it properly rather than show up and guess in front of a paying client on her wedding night.

Why a wide, fast lens matters more here than almost anywhere else I shoot

Astrophotography needs to gather as much light as possible in a genuinely short usable exposure window before star trails become visible, meaning a wide aperture, ideally f/2.8 or faster, and a wide focal length that reduces the visible effect of the earth's rotation during the exposure. I rented a genuinely fast wide prime specifically for this one shot, since my usual portrait and event lenses simply aren't built for this job.

The 500 rule, and why I use a stricter version of it now

A rough guideline divides 500 by your lens's focal length to estimate the longest shutter speed before stars visibly trail, and my first backyard test shots using that exact number showed slight trailing once I examined the files at full zoom, pushing me toward a stricter version of the same rule dividing by a smaller number instead, sacrificing a bit of exposure time for genuinely pinpoint stars in the final file.

ISO, and unlearning my usual instinct to keep it as low as possible

Everything about my regular wedding and portrait work trains me to keep ISO as low as reasonably possible, and astrophotography inverted that instinct entirely, my actual milky way shots used an ISO high enough that I'd never consider it for normal work, a genuinely uncomfortable setting to dial in the first several times before trusting that the resulting noise was an acceptable tradeoff for a genuinely dark scene.

Manual focus, and the specific method that actually got stars sharp

Autofocus simply doesn't work reliably on stars in near-total darkness, and my first backyard attempts using autofocus produced consistently soft, out-of-focus results. I switched to manual focus, using the camera's magnified live view zoomed into a bright star to nail focus by eye before locking it down completely, a genuinely necessary extra step that autofocus can't currently replace for this kind of shot.

Scouting the actual venue before the wedding night itself

I drove out to the remote venue a full week before the wedding specifically to test the same settings under the actual sky conditions I'd be shooting, checking for light pollution direction and confirming which part of the venue actually had a clear view away from the reception tent's own lighting, a scouting trip that revealed a genuinely better vantage point than the one I'd assumed from photos alone.

A tripod and remote shutter, non-negotiable for this specific shot

Given how far this pushed my usual shutter speeds, a sturdy tripod and a remote or timer release were genuinely mandatory rather than optional, the same lesson I'd already learned the hard way testing long exposure filters months earlier, and having already internalized that lesson from a different context made this part of the setup the one thing I didn't have to relearn from scratch.

Combining the stars with the actual reception tent, the shot the client asked for

The client's actual request wasn't a pure sky shot but the tent lit up beneath the stars, meaning I needed a second, differently exposed frame of the tent itself blended with the star exposure afterward in editing, a compositing step I hadn't anticipated needing until reviewing my scouting trip files and realizing a single exposure couldn't properly expose both the bright tent and the dark sky simultaneously.

Checking the moon phase, a factor I nearly overlooked entirely

A bright moon washes out the sky's contrast against the milky way dramatically, and I hadn't considered this at all during my first backyard tests, which happened to fall during a genuinely dark, new-moon stretch by pure luck. Scouting the actual wedding date, I confirmed the moon phase in advance and found it fell favorably too, but I now check this specifically for any future astrophotography booking rather than trusting luck a second time.

Stacking multiple exposures, a technique I tested but ultimately didn't need

Combining several identical exposures in editing software can reduce noise significantly compared to a single frame at a high ISO, and I practiced this stacking technique during my backyard tests specifically as a backup plan in case the single-frame result looked too noisy for print-quality delivery. In the end, the venue's genuinely dark sky and the client's actual use case, a digital gallery image rather than a large print, meant a single well-exposed frame was sufficient, but I'm glad I'd rehearsed the stacking process in case that hadn't been true.

What actually happened on the wedding night itself

After six weeks of backyard tests and one dedicated scouting trip, the actual shot came together in about fifteen minutes once the reception wound down and I had the sky largely to myself, the scouted vantage point, the stricter shutter speed rule, and the manual focus method all working exactly as rehearsed. The client cried looking at the back of my camera, and that single frame has become one of the most requested images from my entire portfolio since, entirely because I refused to show up and guess in front of a paying client on the most important night of her year.
